Jane and I like a good cocktail to cap off the day. We also like to get our days started with a fresh cup of espresso or cappuccino. When you have a hoard of dogs creating a ruckus as early as 6am, you need something to get you going. It was only a matter of time before we combined the two and a shot of espresso in your evening cocktail has the added benefit of giving you a little energy to go with your buzz.
Not too long ago, we started seeing a lot of coffee flavored drinks showing up on cocktail menus but a lot were either made with flavored liqueurs or Irish Creams. We wanted something a little more straight forward that included the bold flavor of espresso as its own component. Plus, I will find any excuse to fire up the espresso machine. Seriously, it may be my most cherished possession.
The Head Start is primarily a bourbon drink which the espresso plays with and balances perfectly. We added the Creme De Cacao to bring in a little cocoa with a hint of vanilla, as well as body. The maraschino was then included for a touch more sweetness and to round out the bitter flavors of the espresso. Finally, add a brandied cherry for garnish. It’s a nice surprise at the finish of the drink.
1.5 oz of bourbon
1 oz espresso, cool or room temperature
1/2 oz Tempus Fugit Spirits Creme de Cacao a la Vanille
1/2 oz maraschino
Garnish: brandied cherry
Glass: Coupe
Pour each component into a cocktail shaker, add ice,
and shake.
Strain into a coupe glass and add cherry.
Serve and enjoy!
